February is almost here! I’m back for another round up of chapter books for kids to read during the month of February! Some are Valentine’s Day related, chocolate/candy theme, or all about love and kindness.
I’m sharing some great books for beginning chapter book readers, more advanced readers, or any could be used as a family read aloud. They are grouped together by age range, with a quick synopsis of each book.
**I have not read ALL of these books, but have read most of them or reviews. I am only sharing books we have loved or plan to read in the future. I’ll definitely update this list as we read through them all.

Ages 5-9

Owl Diaries: Warm Hearts Day by Rebecca Elliot
A great early chapter book and one of my daughter’s favorite book series! “It’s almost Warm Hearts Day! Everyone is busy making gifts for their loved ones. Eva LOVES crafting, so she creates all sorts of fun gifts and treats for her friends. She is excited to give out her homemade gifts at the big party at the Old Oak Tree. But then Eva realizes she forgot to make gifts for her family! Will she be able to make the gifts in time?” (Amazon)

Sophie Mouse and the Great Bake Off by Poppy Green
Another favorite beginner series with easy to read text and lots of illustrations. “When Sophie helps her mom bake all sorts of sweets, they realize there’s plenty to share with the nearby village. Can they find their way there before the sweets go bad?” (Amazon)

Nate the Great and the Mushy Valentine by Margorie Weinman Sharmat
Great detective mysteries for beginning chapter book readers. “Nate the Great hates mushy stuff. Then he spies a big red paper heart taped to Sludge’s doghouse. Who left Nate’s dog a secret valentine? Nate will solve the case, and then there will be no more mushy stuff. At least that’s what he thinks. .” (Amazon)

The Alien Next Door: The Mystery Valentine by A.I. Newton
This fun series is a favorite of my son, about an alien that is disguised as a kid and learns everything about being a human. “Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and Harris explains the holiday and its traditions to Zeke. When Zeke gets an anonymous valentine, Harris is excited to help him figure out who sent it, but Zeke is confused at the customs of Earth, and his efforts to get a girl to notice him by doing what Harris tells him to don’t go quite right. Will Zeke be able to turn things around and show his valentine his feelings?” (Amazon)

The Critter Club: Ellie’s Lovely Idea by Callie Barkley
The cutest series with a group of girls who created The Critter Club, a rescue shelter for lost and lonely animals. In this book, “Valentine’s Day is coming up, and to raise money for a charity called Puppy Love, Ellie suggests that she and The Critter Club girls sell singing telegrams. The girls have a lot of fun writing and performing the songs, but all the holiday spirit makes Ellie wish someone would send her a singing telegram! Will Ellie get her wish?” (Amazon)

A-Z Mysteries: Secret Admirer by Ron Roy
Great mystery series for beginning readers and I love how this one ends! “Valentine’s Day was so much more fun when they were little. Then they each start getting messages and clues from a secret admirer! Can the kids figure out who wants to be their Valentine?” (Amazon)
Ages 7-10

The Story of Abraham Lincoln by Carla Jablonski
Celebrate the birth month of our 16th president with this fun biography for younger readers!

Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew: Valentine’s Day Secret by Carolyn Keene
Another favorite series my daughter loves! “It’s Valentine’s Day, but things are not all hearts and flowers for Nancy! While she and her best friends, Bess and George, are making their own stuffed animals at Farmer Fran’s Barnyard Buddies, someone slips a mean valentine into Bess’ animal’s pocket. What’s worse than a mean valentine? Bess thinks it came from George! Now the two are in their worst fight ever – and Nancy’s caught in the middle! How can she sew Bess and George’s friendship – not to mention the Clue Crew – back together?”

Geronimo Stilton: Valentine’s Day Disaster by Geronimo Stilton
These are always great books containing tons of illustrations and fun text with the “Indiana Jones of the mouse world.” “Every Valentine’s Day Geronimo Stilton throws a big party, and he’s sure this one is going to be the best yet! Isn’t it? When failed deliveries and burst sewer pipes leave Geronimo questioning what more could go wrong, a kindly stranger shows him that love really is all around.” (Amazon)
If you enjoy this one, you can also check out other Valentine’s books in the series: Geronimo’s Valentine and Have a Heart Geronimo.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Of course I had to add this classic story all about chocolate and candy for February! This is a great family read aloud that all my kids have loved. A great family movie night when you finish the story as well!

Ways to Grow Love by Renee Watson
My daughter will be reading this book this month with her LA Dart curriculum. “Ryan Hart loves her family and friends. She’s looking forward to summer vacation, spending time with loved ones, and her first trip to sleepaway camp! But when an unexpected camper shows up, Ryan finds it’s hard to share your best friend and harder to be a friend to someone who isn’t a good friend to you. The Hart family is also experiencing a lot of changes, and Ryan needs to grow her patience in many ways, find ways to share the love, meet new challenges, and grow into the leader her mom and dad named her to be.” (Amazon)

The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Catling
Another fun book for the whole family that I’ve heard great things about! “In this zany twist on the legend of King Midas and his golden touch, a boy acquires a magical gift that turns everything his lips touch into chocolate! Can you ever have too much of your favorite food? John Midas is about to find out” (Amazon)
Ages 9-10

The Candy Smash by Jacqueline Davies
From the author of the Lemonade War books, this is another Beverly Cleary-type book about heart and honesty. “Evan believes some things (such as his poetry) are private. Jessie (his sister) believes scandal makes good news. When anonymously sent candy hearts appear in Class 4-0, self-appointed ace reporter Jessie determines to get the scoop on class crushes.” (Amazon)

George Washington’s Socks by Elvira Woodruff
An exciting adventure to celebrate George Washington’s February birthday! “A mysterious rowboat transports five adventurous kids back in time to the eve of the Battle at Trenton where they experience the American Revolution. Through encounters with Hessian soldiers, revolutionaries, and even George Washington himself, Matthew, Quentin, Hooter, Tony, and Katie watch history unfold before their eyes as they see first-hand, the grim realities of war and the cost of freedom.” (Amazon)

Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Wonder is a story about a ten-year-old boy who has facial differences. Because of his medical condition, he was home-schooled through fourth grade and now begins his first year of school as a fifth-grade student. This is a beautiful story about compassion, love, and friendship.

Pay It Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde *Young Readers Addition
“Pay It Forward is a moving, uplifting novel about Trevor McKinney, a twelve-year-old boy in a small California town who accepts his teacher’s challenge to earn extra credit by coming up with a plan to change the world. Trevor’s idea is simple: do a good deed for three people, and instead of asking them to return the favor, ask them to “pay it forward” to three others who need help. He envisions a vast movement of kindness and goodwill spreading across the world, and in this “quiet, steady masterpiece with an incandescent ending” (Kirkus Reviews), Trevor’s actions change his community forever.” (Amazon)
So many great books out there and I hope you found some new ones to read together! Please leave your reviews of any of these or more recommendations in the comments below!
Happy Reading!
