Our next study unit was all about butterflies and I had been waiting all year for this! I was so excited to learn about them but wanted to wait until the spring. We started off by doing some fun activities based off one of my kids favorite books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
We read the story and did some fun activities that go with it. These fun mats are great for working on fine motor skills. You can use do-a-dot markers, playdough, or pebbles like we did. (You can find these pebbles at the Dollar Store or any craft store in the floral section.)
My daughter also worked on her beginning sounds.

This book is great for learning about the days of the week. They had to put the days of the week in order and then use the story to add the correct food the caterpillar ate each day.
We used the food cards to talk about what foods are healthy and good for you and which are unhealthy.
We practiced counting with these cute clip cards. This was my sons favorite activity! He was so excited as he just figured out how to use the clothespin to clip it on the card so he did this so many times! Great fine motor practice!
You can find all of these printables (plus more) from Let’s Play School’s My First School Curriculum Pack.
Next we also worked on our handwriting with these days of the week tracing pages. Free printable found HERE.
And another great fine motor activity. Coloring and using a hole punch to “eat” the different foods. My daughter loved this activity. Free printable HERE.
My favorite part of this unit is our Insect Lore Butterfly Kit! If you haven’t done one of these before it is a must!! It has been so much fun to watch our caterpillars and watch them grow. As I type this they have just formed their chrysalis and it was so incredible to watch. We can’t wait until they emerge into butterflies! This is the one we used but they also have a Very Hungry Caterpillar inspired one! Click the photo for the link.
Here are some more fun snack ideas and crafts that we didn’t get around to doing.
Check my post HERE for a fun caterpillar craft and other bugs.
Hope you all have a great week!
