Last week we learned all about gardening!

Now let’s be real, I have a black thumb and kill everything but love the idea of having a fruitful garden one day. One of my goals when my kids get a little older is to have my own small garden. That will take a lot more planning and research so for now we just did a small study on gardening and flowers. Check out all the fun we had:

We started the week off by a field trip to a nursery. We looked at all the different plants and picked out our favorites.

We bought some pots to bring home to paint and the kids each picked out some flower seeds to plant. (These also make great gifts for Grandparents, etc. 😉)

We colored our garden emergent reader and practiced handwriting with printables from our Let’s Play School Garden Pack (part of our monthly subscription).

My favorite activity that we did (from that garden pack) was this word family flower pots. Each pot had a word family and each flower had a different word. My daughter had to read the word on the flower and match it to the correct flower pot word family. So cute and a great hands on lesson!

We also practiced our sight words with these sight word seeds. She would read the word and “plant” the seed into the “dirt” (black beans.)

Next we headed outside on a hunt to find as many different types of flowers we could on our property. I was surprised as to how many we did find!

It was such a beautiful day we decided to stay outside to paint our flower findings. We painted with watercolors and also used our Kwik Stixs. If you have never used Kwik Stixs before give them a try! They are sold tempera paint that needs no water, is fast drying and washable. My kids love to color and create with them.

Next we did our first dissection…flowers. We took the flowers apart talking about each of the pieces and what they are for. We also compared the differences between the pieces of each kind of flower we took apart.

Here is a fun snack idea for garden week. Chocolate pudding, crushed up Oreo cookies for the “dirt” on top and gummy worms. My kids thought this was so funny and tasty 😋

And here are some great books we read throughout the week!

For our art project we made these really cool 3-D Popcorn Flowers. Make some popcorn and paint some pieces whatever color you like. On a piece of white paper I drew some stems and leaves. Then we glued on the popcorn to look like flower petals.

They turned out so cute and smelled great too! Snacking and crafting is always a good idea…just don’t eat the ones with paint on them! 😆

To finish our garden week we did this fun sensory bin with My Garden Look and Find Set and Garden Beginning Sound Strip Cards from Bitty Beginnings. My son had to find the garden themed pieces and match them. My daughter had to find the beginning sounds of the pictures using scrabble letters.

We hope you enjoyed our garden week themed adventures and activities and are able to do some with your family too! Now I have to go remember to help the kids water their seeds so they will grow. 😆
